Bloomberg Terminal

A guide on how to use and access the Bloomberg Terminals at the NYU Law Library

What information can I download?

Downloading and Sharing Restrictions

Data, screenshots, reports, and other materials downloaded from the Bloomberg terminal should not, under any circumstances, be shared with individuals outside of NYU. If you have questions about whether a particular use is permitted, please contact us and we can advise.

Copying and Pasting Data into Excel

  1. Position your cursor at the corner of a table.
  2. Press and hold the left click (not the right click) and drag across the data you would like to copy. Bloomberg will automatically copy the text/data to your clipboard when you release the left click.
  3. In Excel, right click or press ctrl + v to paste.
  4. If necessary, click on the "Data" tab on top of the ribbon and then "Text to Columns" and select "Fixed width" to finish formatting.

Taking Screenshots of the Interface

  • Click "Export" in the upper-right-hand menu and then "Grab Screen".
  • Use the command GRAB <GO> to send a screenshot via email.

Note: Not all screens can be "Grabbed" and some screens have custom export options.

Bloomberg Excel API

The Bloomberg Desktop API is a suite of Excel tools that allows you to query Bloomberg's underlying data for further custom analysis. Use the DAPI command to access the API's support documentation, including video tutorials.

Data downloaded using the API should not, under any circumstances, be removed from the Bloomberg terminal (i.e. local PC). Only your analysis of the data can be removed.
